The effects of inoculation and N fertilizer on soyabean variety Clark were studied on Njala uplant soil. Poor nodulation in inoculated soyabean might be due to high soil temperature and moisture stress on gravelly Njala upland soils. No significant differences were observed between inoculated and uninoculated means and interactions between inoculation and N rates were also non‐significant with respect to dry weight, N uptake, bean yield, pods/plant and 100 seed weight. Application of 60 and 90 kg N/ha showed significant and highly significant increases in bean yield as compared with control, respectively except 30 kg N/ha which could not reach the level of significance. Bean yield highly significantly correlated with N uptake (r = 0.769\*\*) and pods/plant (r = 0.917\*\*) but only reach a level of significance (r = 0.498\*) with 100 seed weight.
