Effect of Shoot Number and Time of Planting on Growth, Development and Yield of Cassaya (Manihot EsculentaCrantz)
    (Taylor & Francis, 1972) Enyi, B. A. C.
SummaryRoot tuber yield, weight of individual tubers, root tuber/stem weight ratio at harvest, mean bulking rate, portion of total dry matter diverted into the root tubers, and net assimilation and relative growth rates were greater in single-shoot than in multi-shoot plants. Multi-shoot plants, however, had greater leaf area and leaf area duration. Early planting encouraged the production of greater leaf area, root tuber number per plant, root tuber yield, individual tuber size and dry matter. Bulking rate was positively related to net assimilation rate. In single-shoot plants differences in leaf area duration accounted for 95% of the variation in yield between treatments, and in both single-and multi-shoot plants differences in the product of leaf area duration and mean net assimilation rate accounted for 75% of the total variation in yield between treatments.

Effect of staking, nitrogen and potassium on growth and development in lesser yams: Dioscorea esculenta
    (Wiley, 1972-10-01) Enyi, B. A. C.
SUMMARY Dry‐matter accumulation was greater in staked than in unstaked plants of the lesser yam (Dioscorea esculenta). Staking, N and K application tended to increase the proportion of dry matter diverted into the tubers. Staking was the most important factor in increasing total tuber production, which was one and a half times greater in staked than in unstaked plants. Leaf‐area development was closely and positively related to vine growth, and since staking and N application encouraged vine growth these treatments therefore led to the production of plants with greater leaf area. Leaf‐area duration was increased by staking and N application and was closely and positively related to tuber yield. Staking and N application increased tuber number per plant while K application increased the size of individual tubers. Staking and K application increased bulking rate and both treatments increased the period of bulking by causing earlier tuber initiation.

The effects of seed size and spacing on growth and yield of lesser yam (Dioscorea esculenta)
    (Cambridge University Press, 1972-04-01) Enyi, B. A. C.
SUMMARY The effects of seed size and spacing on growth, development and yield of lesser yam and the relationship between growth, development and yield in this yam variety were investigated in the 1967 and 1968 growing seasons. Larger seeds outyielded smaller ones both in the total and ware tuber yields. The seed size effect was associated with a difference in tuber number, leaf area duration and bulking rate. Mean tuber weight at harvest, decreased with the decrease in seed size. Total and ware tuber yields increased with the decrease in spacing distance. The spacing effect was associated with differences in leaf area duration and bulking rate per unit area. Final total dry matter produced per plant increased with the increase in both seed size and spacing distance but the dry matter produced per unit area decreased with the increase in spacing distance. Leaf area index and leaf area duration increased with an increase in seed size and decreased with increase in spacing distance. There was a greater positive relationship between total tuber yield and leaf area duration between tuber initiation and the final sampling period than that between it and absolute leaf area duration.
